Jupiter reaches peak brightness: how to observe the gas giant’s opposition

On January 10, a unique astronomical event began—the opposition of Jupiter. The gas giant will shine brightest in the coming days, outshining all the stars. This is the perfect time to admire the largest planet in our Solar System with the naked eye.

What is opposition?

Opposition is when Earth is directly between the Sun and another planet. Jupiter will be opposite the Sun in the sky, so it’ll be super bright. This makes it a really bright object that shows up in the east in the evening, peaks at midnight, and sets at dawn.

How to find Jupiter in the sky?

The planet shines in the constellation Gemini, next to the bright stars Castor and Pollux. It is easily recognizable by its intense light. Even without optics, you can clearly see Jupiter in the sky.

What do you need to observe?

First, you need a clear sky. Regular binoculars (for example, 10×50) will show Jupiter not as a dot, but as a small disk, as well as its four largest moons—Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Their positions change every night.

During observations of Jupiter, three special shadow transits are visible: a unique “shadow eclipse” of Callisto (top left), a partial shadow eclipse of Io (bottom left), and a close approach of Europa and its shadow (top right). Author: Stellarium

But the real miracle will be revealed by a telescope. Even a small instrument will be able to show dark cloud bands on the planet’s disk—powerful atmospheric jets. Under favorable conditions, you can even see the Great Red Spot—a giant hurricane that has been raging for centuries.

A little lower in the southwest, after sunset, Saturn will be visible. But its rings will be almost invisible due to their perpendicular position relative to Earth.

What will happen next?

Jupiter will remain bright and clearly visible in the evening throughout January and February. And on June 9, it will form a beautiful conjunction with Venus and Mercury. The next opposition of Jupiter will take place on February 6, 2027.
