Planetarium in a fairy tale: A Crimson Desert player accidentally reached space

If you follow the gaming industry, you’ve surely come across the name Crimson Desert in your news feed. This ambitious project from Pearl Abyss, which combines fantasy action and RPG elements with a vast open world, has become one of the most talked-about games of the year. Despite mixed reviews from critics regarding the plot and technical quality, the game achieved an incredible result—five million copies sold in less than a month. However, the real sensation awaited the players not in the sword fights, but high above their heads.

A Reddit user going by the username Jogatina posted a video that pushed the boundaries of the game world. Using a clever combination of the Aerial Stab and Force Palm skills, the player was able to literally break through the barrier into space. Breaking through the thick layer of clouds, the character found themselves facing a breathtaking starry sky, dotted with distinct constellations and distant galaxies. It looks like a real planetarium hidden inside a fantasy tale.

Why does a fantasy world need real space?

The main question that arose among researchers of digital worlds is: why did developers spend resources on creating a detailed night sky that, logically speaking, players should never encounter? The answer lies in the structure of the Universe created by Pearl Abyss.

Drawing inspiration from the concept of floating islands, the developers added a location called “Abyss” to the game. It is a series of interconnected platforms floating high above the ground. While there, players can observe celestial bodies in such detail that it required the creation of a full-fledged, high-resolution “skybox.”

Will they close the “window to space”?

Space in Crimson Desert isn’t just a backdrop. The developers have integrated astronomy directly into the gameplay. Players can find a unique item called the “Helmet of the Constellations.” When you put it on, you gain the ability to track 13 specific constellations scattered across the night sky.

Each constellation presents a unique challenge for the explorer. Anyone who finds all 13 celestial figures will earn a prestigious achievement called Star Navigator. This turns simply gazing at the stars into an exciting quest that requires attention to detail and knowledge of celestial cartography.

Pearl Abyss is currently working hard on patches to fix bugs and improve the player experience. There is a possibility that the glitch allowing players to “fly off” into space due to errors in the skill mechanics will be fixed. However, fans are hoping that the developers will leave this “bug” in, as it has become a unique feature of the game.

We previously reported on how the sky in the game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 perfectly matched the astronomical charts from 1403.
