Record explosion on Io: Jupiter’s moon released energy equivalent to all Earth’s power stations

The most volcanically active body in the Solar System, Jupiter’s moon Io, has once again amazed scientists. Data from NASA’s Juno spacecraft recorded the most powerful eruption ever observed on this distant world. This phenomenon not only broke records, but also revealed new secrets about the moon’s underground life. Details of the discovery are published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.

During its flyby near Io on December 27, 2024, the JIRAM infrared spectrometer aboard Juno detected incredibly bright thermal radiation in the Southern Hemisphere. Its source turned out to be not one, but a whole group of active volcanic objects that erupted almost simultaneously. The total energy output exceeded 80 trillion watts. For comparison, this is about six times more than the total power of all power plants on our planet.

“This is the most powerful volcanic event ever recorded on the most volcanic world in our system, ” emphasizes Scott Bolton, mission leader.

What makes this discovery special? The synchronicity of the flashes indicates that there may be a huge interconnected system of magma chambers deep beneath the surface of Io. Its simultaneous activation led to such a colossal release of energy.

“We have evidence that these are several close hot spots that emitted simultaneously,” explains Alessandro Mura, lead author of the study. This discovery could radically change our understanding of Io’s geology.

The reason for Io’s turbulent nature lies in its position. The moon is caught between the gravitational pull of Jupiter and the influence of its neighbors, Ganymede and Europa. This tug-of-war literally stretches and compresses Io, causing its surface to bulge hundreds of meters. This “tidal heating” generates a tremendous amount of energy inside the moon, which finds its way out through numerous volcanoes. Lava constantly renews the landscape, filling craters and smoothing out the terrain.

Peering into the future

Scientists plan to take advantage of Juno’s next close flyby of Io on March 3, 2026, to study the effects of the record-breaking eruption and changes on the surface in detail. This discovery not only demonstrates the incredible power of nature, but also provides a key to understanding volcanic processes on extreme worlds throughout the universe.
