The Earth’s rotation was used to generate electricity

A team from Princeton University and NASA has experimentally proven that the Earth’s rotational energy can be converted into electrical current. Their simple, fuel-free device paves the way for a fundamentally new source of energy. The laboratory experiment is reported in a publication in Physical Review Research.

Planetary dynamo

Researchers created a hollow cylinder from a special magnetic material—manganese-zinc ferrite. It has low electrical conductivity but actively interacts with magnetic fields. The device was carefully oriented in the Princeton laboratory, aligning it at a specific angle relative to the Earth’s axis and magnetic poles.

When the Earth rotates, tension arises in the cylinder material due to the Lorentz force. Previously, it was believed that such currents quickly “close” and cancel each other out. But the team found a “loophole”: thanks to the special geometry and properties of the material, they managed to avoid this and obtain a stable, albeit tiny, voltage.

Highly accurate experiment

The experiment required incredible precision. All external influences – from temperature fluctuations to electromagnetic noise – were eliminated. Measurements were taken in a shielded underground room.

A series of control tests was conducted to confirm the results. A cylinder made of ordinary steel did not produce any voltage. Scientists also ruled out the influence of thermoelectric effects. As a result, the signal obtained changed direction in accordance with the theory, proving its “planetary” origin.

From the laboratory to space

Although the output power is negligible (tens of nanowatts), the principle itself is revolutionary. It does not require sunlight or fuel, operating solely on the rotation of the planet. This could become a source of energy for autonomous sensors or even equipment in space.

“The first thing that needs to happen is that some independent group needs to reproduce, or rebut, our results,” notes Professor Chyba, who led the study. The discovery also changes our understanding of the energy potential of other planets: any body with a magnetic field and rotation could have a similar electromagnetic resource.

If the technology can be scaled up, humanity will gain a fundamentally new, literally “grounded” way of generating energy.

Earlier, we reported on how ancient scientists discovered that the Earth revolves around the Sun.
