When it comes to threats to economic stability, experts consider everything from cyberattacks to political conflicts. But a senior analyst at the Bank of England warns of a risk that seems fantastical — first contact with an extraterrestrial civilization.
A warning from the heart of the financial system

Helen McCaw, who previously worked at the Bank of England, is calling on key institutions, including her former employer, to start preparing for a financial crisis caused by official confirmation of the existence of extraterrestrial life. She has already approached the bank’s governor, Andrew Bailey, appealing for the need to have contingency plans in place for emergencies that threaten stability.
Her concern stems from the fact that, in her opinion, the US government is in the process of gradually disclosing information about UFOs, or, as they are more correctly called, “unidentified anomalous phenomena” (UAP). If it turns out that they are of artificial, non-human origin, humanity will face a force more powerful than any state, and one with unknown intentions at that.
Alien shock effect
According to McCow, the main danger lies in the reaction of financial markets. The discovery could trigger sharp fluctuations on the stock markets — from catastrophic panic to unbridled euphoria. But the worst-case scenario would be a complete loss of confidence, when traders stop believing in the future of the human economic system.
“If an official statement is made with irrefutable evidence, we could see complete financial instability within hours,” the expert claims. This could lead to bank bankruptcies, the collapse of payment systems, and social unrest when people are unable to buy even the most basic necessities.
Plan even the impossible

No one knows exactly how humanity will react psychologically to such a discovery. That is why, McCow notes, financial regulators are obliged to consider even such an exotic risk. Even if the probability seems minimal, ignoring it would be unwise.
The former analyst insists that in a world where reality often surpasses fiction, being prepared for any scenario is not a sign of fear, but rather a manifestation of responsibility for the stability of the global economy.
